Buying recreational retail cannabis for the first time

Retail Weed Is Here

Now that cannabis is legal across Canada, retail weed stores have been popping up all over the place. At present time there are 11 retail cannabis stores open in Calgary, with several more opening up each week. How is it though? Buying recreational weed in a retail store? Retail cannabis is such an interesting thing to think about, as it’s been against the law for so long. I imagine police are having an awkward time with legalization haha!

What’s it like buying recreational retail cannabis? I decided to go and buy some to find out. Because why not? I go and buy beer all the time too.

The outside of Queen of Bud is pretty unassuming. Nice and bland with no advertising or signage other than the Queen of Bud logo. This weed store is located just across the street from Sun Alta c-train station. I walked up, opened the door and went inside.

It did feel a little weird to be honest, even though it’s legal now, it still FEELS like you’re doing something illegal going in a place like this. At least it did for me.

I didn’t take any photos of the inside, other than the bud menu below. After going through the front door you’re presented with a large fancy looking room. Everything was white. Some guy asked to see my ID, then I made my way to the main room with the counter to order from. There was a line of people just standing in awe at the selection and trying to make up their minds.

A couple of staff members walked around with tablets offering to help people make a selection or answer any questions they have.

When I was ready I walked up to the staff member at the counter. The first two things I picked out were sold out, so I opted to go with:

  • 2 grams of All Kush (hybrid of Indica and Sativa). $23.18
  • 2 grams of La Strada (Sativa). $22.00

They rang it up, I paid with debit, and then they handed me a small black boutique bag and then I left. My grand total was $47.44.

At the end of the day it was me just going into a store to buy something, and it went great. No issues.

I was surprised at the amount of packaging for the products. The All Kush came in the small black packets – which were nearly impossible to open.

I ordered 2 grams of the sativa and they gave me two 1x gram plastic containers that could hold a significant amount more. Hopefully people recycle these things.

There you have it. This was the first retail weed store in Calgary I’ve been to, but I imagine they’re all a very similar experience. We live in interesting times. Hopefully this blog post helps encourage someone to go out and purchase cannabis. It’s new, it’ll feel weird, but you can do it!

  1. I don’t really care for her little story that makes it seem like she battled against Cannabis Prohibition. It’s a slap in the face to all the people who went to jail for selling cannabis. If it wasn’t for us refusing to allow the government to stop the Cannabis trade “The Queen” wouldn’t even exist

    • I don’t think her little story as you say is that she battled against prohibition. Nowhere does she state that, she tells her story as without cannabis she would have had a lot harder time battling against life and it’s many challenges and that she wants to see a shift in the perspective and negative connotations that cannabis has.

But I just researched, it is plain as day on her Facebook and website.
