Kinky Boots in Calgary: an Absolute Must See

Kinky Boots in Calgary

It’s not very often I have a “moment” while locking eyes with a drag queen, and yet that is exactly what happened when I attended a recent performance of Kinky Boots in Calgary. I didn’t really know anything about the show, as I like to go in “blind” as it were, but I am ALL about boots. I wear boots every day and I’ve long since envied anyone who can rock the sky high stilettos that truly make a pair of boots kinky.

So Much Sole!

“Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Sons. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos.”

This small little description on the show’s website does nothing to prepare you for the magic that is Lola. Lola, Lola, Lola. Fabulous, brave, fierce, and loving Lola was everything for me. From the young boy Simon shadowboxing in red stiletto pumps, to the vision in red that stole my heart, the role of Lola is unlike anything I have seen before in musical theatre. It was magical, endearing, funny, sad, and just an amazing show. This kind of show is something you really need to see in person. Reviews and videos and write ups don’t do it justice. It’s a show you can see multiple times and not catch everything, the energy and glitz are palpable.

Every other character was perfection in their role, but writing this and recalling the show, I only have room for Lola. Growing up with a father as a prizefighter, young Simon trained but yearned to be free to rock the stilettos and feel the joy of being Lola. A poignant and timely story of embracing who you are in a world where you are expected to conform, Simon and Lola took turns lifting my heart and breaking it at the same time, until it culminated in “the moment” when Lola sang her heart out in a hauntingly powerful and beautiful ballad, all while staring into my eyes.
The third row was an extra weepy place that night and I will be forever grateful that I had the incredible luck to experience it. It’s an extremely powerful couple of hours, with peaking highs, and deep lows. You don’t normally see such a range of emotion in shows like this, not everything is peachy.
