{"id":951,"date":"2015-06-21T01:24:20","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T08:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/?p=951"},"modified":"2019-06-17T12:13:16","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T19:13:16","slug":"search-for-tweets-near-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/?p=951","title":{"rendered":"Twitter Tips: Search for Tweets Near Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Search for Tweets Near Calgary<\/h2>\n<p>A feature built into twitter that we use frequently is to search for tweets near you \/ near by location, which shows you results\u00a0close to where you are physically.<\/p>\n<p>We (myself and Mrs Crackmacs) currently use the official twitter app for Android, as well as the twitter.com web client. There are lots of other twitter apps out there that better utilize these search functions, such as the Near you \/ Near by function, but since we use the main twitter offerings, this is only relevant people that also use what we do.<\/p>\n<p>Why would you want to search for tweets near you?\u00a0This is especially helpful with breaking news or current events because content people share doesn&#8217;t always include proper hashtags.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here&#8217;s how to do it<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With the twitter.com web client, when you search for something (in this case: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=raining&amp;src=typd&amp;vertical=default&amp;f=tweets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raining<\/a>) click the &#8220;more options&#8221; and select &#8220;near you&#8221; to see local results.<\/p>\n<h3>Twitter.com<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/searches.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-952 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/searches-620x562.png\" alt=\"Search for tweets near you\" width=\"620\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/searches-620x562.png 620w, https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/searches-644x584.png 644w, https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/searches.png 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Twitter for Android<\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to do it on Android. There isn&#8217;t a way of setting &#8220;Near you&#8221; to be on all the time so you will need to refine it each time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-961 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/crackmacs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Screenshot_2015-06-20-20-31-46.png\" alt=\"Search for tweets near you\" width=\"350\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example on how this would be useful;<\/p>\n<p>if a fire just broke out somewhere in the city I could search for the word\u00a0<strong>fire<\/strong>\u00a0and refine it to show\u00a0<strong>Near you<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0see any tweets where someone said the word <strong>fire<\/strong>\u00a0and tweeted it\u00a0within or near by\u00a0Calgary, so long as the person who tweeted has locations enabled. If someone has &#8220;allow twitter to use your location&#8221; disabled then their tweets will <strong>not show up<\/strong> with this method.<\/p>\n<p>Just now\u00a0I searched for <strong>cop\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>near by<\/strong>. RC is located in Calgary and it found this tweet, which I wouldn&#8217;t have found if I had just been searching by\u00a0hashtags. Riley Babott (@CstBabott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CstBabott\/status\/799002457657327616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 16, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Another way of doing this is using an advance search string in the search box, this lets you find tweets from near by any location.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>rain near:Calgary<br \/>\n<\/strong>this will look for any tweets where someone said <strong>rain<\/strong> and the\u00a0person tweeted it from Calgary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another helpful search method is finding tweets by a certain person. You&#8217;ll find this extremely helpful if you&#8217;ve ever lost one of your own tweets, or want to find something from years ago.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>from:Crackmacs\u00a0rain<br \/>\n<\/strong>This checks @Crackmacs for any mention of the word <strong>rain<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=from%3ACrackmacs%20rain&amp;src=typd&amp;vertical=default&amp;f=tweets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See it live here.<\/a>\u00a0You can use this to search other accounts too. Like If I searched\u00a0<strong>from:Nenshi lol<\/strong>\u00a0it would show any tweets where Nenshi said lol.
