The smash hit Broadway musical (and Hollywood movie) Mamma Mia! has landed in Calgary for an oh-so brief sendoff as the show continues on it’s farewell tour. Get ready to dance in your chair, sing out loud, and laugh until you cry. Repeatedly! Or you can just sit there quietly. Hope you love ABBA!
I’d never seen Mamma Mia! before, in any of it’s versions, nor did I know what it was about. I like seeing performances this way, with no foreknowledge. You should try it some time, it’s a great way to watch movies too. No expectations, no hype.
About Mamma Mia!
The story centers around a young woman who is about to get married, but she longs to know who her father is when she isn’t getting any answers from her mother. After finding mom’s old diary she narrows it down to three gents, who she sneakily invites to her wedding in hopes she will figure it out in time to have dear old dad walk her down the aisle. Oh, and she does all this without mom knowing. You can guess how well that one went over.
The entire show was punctuated with ABBA songs, costume changes and a ton of jokes. Some jokes were preeeeetty sexual in nature and I enjoyed it immensely, though I was thankful I chose to bring an adult friend, and not my daughter, to the show. I don’t envy all the parents who did bring their kids and the questions they probably had to answer on the way home!
Make sure you stay for all of the encores. The costumes alone will make you glad you did.
Mamma Mia! has 4 more shows before it moves on, with 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. You can get your tickets right here: Buy Tickets
