RISE: a social commentary with two legendary voices of the LGBTQ+ movement. In honour of this year’s Calgary Pride Festival, Twisted Element has partnered with HIV Community Link to bring two incredible guest speakers, as well as some local voices, for a night of social commentary.
Ruth Coker Burks
- Known as the Cemetery Angel, Ruth is a former caregiver of AIDS crisis victims and an AIDS awareness advocate based in Arkansas. During the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s, she used her salary as a real estate agent to care for AIDS patients whose families and communities had abandoned them. Because of the prejudices, fears, and stigma surrounding the disease at the time, she was often the patients’ only caregiver until their passing. She is recognized for burying them in her own family cemetery in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Cleve Jones
- Cleave is an American AIDS and LGBT rights activist. He conceived the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt which has become, at 54 tons, the world’s largest piece of community folk art as of 2016. In 1983, at the onset of the AIDS pandemic Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation which has grown into one of the largest and most influential People with AIDS advocacy organizations in the United States.
Both speakers will happily take audience questions at the end of their speech. After Cleve’s speech, there will be a signing of his book, When We Rise. The book will be available on site for purchase with cash, credit or debit courtesy of Pages . . . on Kensington Road.
VIP ticket holders will receive front of the line and have their photo taken with Cleve.

Aug 29, 8 PM – 10 PM | Agokwe || Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society
Written and Performed by Waawaate Fobister
Theatrical One Man Show
Agokwe (written and performed by Waawaate Fobister) is a powerful tale that explores unrequited love between teenage boys – a hockey player and a dancer – from neighboring reserves who connect through a mutual love of movement. But when tragedy intervenes, youth, distance, and isolation strive to pull them apart. This award-winning production, described as a “magnetic plea for tolerance and action” by the Georgia Straight, speaks to bullying, homophobia, unrequited love, social isolation and the lost traditions of the Anishnaabe.
Making Treaty 7 is presenting a special performance of Agokwe (Unplugged) at @thegrandyyc’s Flanagan Theatre on August 29 as part of our Pride Week celebrations. Agokwe was developed through the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Young Creators’ Unit and had its world-premiere at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in September 2008.

This event is open to everyone in our community and our allies! Come out for some sun, a drink and brunch at a Calgary Queer favorite…. the Ship and Anchor.
There will be no reservations, but you can find us on the patio anytime between 11 AM – 1 PM, we will be taking over tables as we roll in (it gets busy later on, so coming in the morning means you may have more luck finding a seat!). We will make some signs to throw on the tables participating, come grab one from Janine when you arrive to let folks know they can join you! Feeling creative? Make your own signs to show your pride!
Why do we do this? Because visibility matters! So often we are hidden in our queer spaces, but we want to be proud together in public! Want to wear a pride flag as a dress? YES! Feeling like head to toe rainbows? REPRESENT! Want to bring some flags or decorations to put on our tables? FUN!
If it’s raining, the takeover will go ahead inside. Any questions? Let us know!

Aug 31, 1 PM – 3 PM | The Fruit Machine – Pride Film Screening
The Military Museums honours the thousands of men and women who suffered an invasion of privacy and the loss of their careers in the military, RCMP, and public service, during the LGBT purge. The LGBT Purge is known as one of the longest and most harmful campaigns of discrimination conducted by the federal government against the LGBT community.
For Pride week, The Military Museums will be screening Sarah Fodey’s “The Fruit Machine”, to honour the thousands of public service members who were affected by the federal campaign.
“The miasma of despair born in those pop-up interrogation rooms has long-paralyzed these public servants and military members. This is their film. A film about the systematic dismissal of homosexual public servants in Canada from the 1950s through 1980s; a story rooted in hope and a country’s struggle to do the right thing.” (thefruitmachine.ca)
Parental Guidance is advised due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

It’s the most colourful event of the year! 2019 brings forth the 29th iteration of the annual Calgary Pride Parade – the signature event that colours all of downtown Calgary with rainbows and smiles! Originally a small march of LGBT Calgarians, some of whom wore masks and bags over their faces to protect from persecution, the event has grown in leaps and bounds to become the second biggest parade in Calgary. Today, Calgary Pride welcomes nonprofit organizations, businesses big and small, politicians, political parties, churches, unions, and more, all to come together and celebrate Calgary’s diversity. This incredible gathering of inclusive and diverse organizations draws tens of thousands of spectators each year and showcases the diversity of Calgary’s community.
