BODY WORLDS Back In Calgary, With Animals!
Just in time for Halloween, BODY WORLDS: Animal Inside Out is now open at TELUS Spark! It opened on October 25th 2019 and we were invited to check out a media preview of it, which was really quite incredible because not only did we see the the exhibit (which is extra incredible), but Dr. Angelina Whalley was there and did a talk giving some details about the plastination process and how the animals came to be where they are today. She’s not only the curator of BODY WORLDS, but she’s married to Gunther von Hagens, the inventor of the plastination technique. It was really interesting – thank you very much TELUS Spark for the invite.

The 140 pages of this catalog show the extraordinary: anatomical specimens, prepared and preserved with a new technology developed by Gunther von Hagens. In addition to the medical and anatomical information about different animal bodies, including a bear, an elephant, and a yak, the catalog contains interesting articles on the topics of bones, muscles, the nervous system, and organs.
What is Plastination?
Invented by scientist and anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, Plastination is the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition to preserve anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. Plastination is the process of extracting all bodily fluids and soluble fat from specimens, replacing them through vacuum-forced impregnation with reactive resins and elastomers, and then curing them with light, heat or certain gases, which give the specimens rigidity and permanence.
Can you bring children? Is It appropriate?
Yes absolutely, however any kids under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Animal Inside Out, like all of the BODY WORLDS exhibits, are meant to teach, to inform, to show people anatomy in a way like they’ve never seen before. Note: There is a couple of human penises on display.
Can you take photos?
Yes actually! Cell phone pictures only. No videos. DSLR and professional cameras are still not allowed. Use hashtags #SparkScience and #BODYWORLDS if sharing on the Instagrams and Twitters.
Where do the animals come from?
ANIMAL INSIDE OUT is made possible with cooperation between various university veterinary programs, zoos and animal groups. No animal was harmed or killed for this exhibition.
How long does it take to go through?
About an hour. Make sure to stop by in the gift shop afterward, some really cool stuff in there.
