Legal Marijuana in Calgary

A day most people thought would never come, weed is now legal in Canada as of October 17th 2018. You can now have up to 30g of marijuana in your possession while out in public, you just can’t smoke it out in public legally. Not yet anyway. That is a topic for another blog post though! The City of Calgary, the AGLC and other governing bodies will hopefully get their shit together soon to make this as painless as possible. Edibles will become legalized in October of 2019. You’re here because you want to know one thing: Where to buy weed in Calgary. Let’s get to it.

Edible Now Available At Stores!

Edibles are available in retail cannabis stores as of today, January 13th 2020. Chocolate, gummies, chocolate that contain THC are now available for recreational purchase at cannabis stores in Calgary. Reminder: keep them out of reach from children. If you’re new to edibles, go slow the first time. Only try a little bit. Find out what your tolerance is, and how long it takes to affect you. You probably know someone who is really smart with unlimited cannabis knowledge, talk to them and ask for advice, they’ll be happy to help.

Retail Weed Stores in Calgary

You can see a map of all weed stores in Calgary here, on the city website and here’s a list of all the stores in Alberta. It lists their application status as well in a Google maps interface.

Google Map Of Cannabis Stores In Calgary

And here’s a Google Maps version. Click here for a direct link to it.

If you yourself would like to open up a retail weed store of your very own in Calgary, go here for info. You’ll want to read this too. And here’s the AGLC application.

Where to buy weed in Calgary

Kijiji/Craigslist/Reddit/Social Media

You CAN ask on these places, but generally you don’t want to. Selling weed is still illegal and you never know who you’ll be dealing with. You could be buying weed laced with unknown substances, and holyshit that can be dangerous these days with Fentanyl. If you know people in Calgary, why not ask them? Weed is legal now, send your friends a message asking where you can buy some weed that isn’t retail. (don’t do this, it’s illegal).

Buy Weed Outside Crack Macs? On the street?

Hah, not recommended. Who knows what you’ll get.

Getting a Medical Marijuana Prescription in Calgary

Even though weed is legal for recreational use in Canada, medical prescriptions still exist and will continue to be written as needed to treat various medical conditions. In Calgary holders of medical marijuana prescriptions are allowed to smoke it in public. Any doctor can write you a prescription for it, however there are several clinics in Calgary with doctors specifically for diagnosing issues and prescribing weed if it’ll help you. Perhaps you’re not comfortable asking your GP or something.

How it works in a nutshell

  • You contact a clinic and make an appointment to see a doctor.
  • Show up, see doctor. In some cases it can just be done over Skype/video calling.
  • Explain what’s wrong. Pain, headache, sleep issues, anxiety etc
  • Get prescription.
  • Consult with Cannabis counselor (wording varies). This person explains the weed, the companies, strains, what you want it for, what kind of high you want etc. This may vary from clinic to clinic but basically you deal with a weed broker who sends your prescription off for you, to the dispensing company of your choosing.
  • Tell them which company you want your weed from. Aurora Cannabis, Broken Coast etc.
  • Once your prescription is added you’ll be able to order your weed.
  • Your prescription will say how much weed you can order per month, and the recommended dose per day.
  • Order, weed shows up at your door in an unmarked package.

Where to buy weed in Calgary

Medical marijuana containers will have your prescription on them so be sure to carry it with you if you’re medicating out in public for when people call the police on you. Note: your prescription will expire so you’ll need to get it updated every 3-6 months kind of thing. Basically you just check in with your doctor and let them know how you’re doing on the dosage you’re taking, like any medication.

Tip: claim your medical marijuana receipts on your taxes. See: Lines 330 and 331 – Eligible medical expenses you can claim on your tax return.

Medical Marijuana Clinics In Calgary

In addition to providing prescriptions for weed, the clinics have tons of information on it. Lots to learn about strains and such. Check their websites!

This isn’t a full list. They aren’t hard to find, Google it! There are some that are online, too. See http://greenleafmc.ca for example.

Ordering Weed Online Without A Prescription

If you want to simply buy some weed online there are several places to do so, but there is only one ‘legal’ site in Alberta. https://albertacannabis.org. At present time they only sell the dried plant, however there are other sites that sell much more than that.

ShamrockCannabis.com. Shamrock Cannabis sells cannabis and stuff. $99 ounces etc. All the accessories. Seems decent.

Doobdasher. I’ve personally never ordered anything from them but I have heard from multiple friends who have that they’re legit/awesome. Discrete and right to your door. They have edibles, concentrates, shatter, CBD, you name it. There are other sites like this and they’re not hard to find. Just Google it man.

CBD Oil in Calgary

If it’s CBD oil you’re after that doesn’t have any THC in it, check out our blog post on where to get CBD oil in Calgary.

  • Hemp derived CBD oil can help with depression, seizures, anxiety, addictions, chronic pain, eating disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy, MS, etc.

In Conclusion

Finding weed in Calgary has never really been too difficult, and now with retail stores, it’s never been easier. More and more strains are coming out all the time. Go visit a cannabis retail store and see what they’re like, even if you don’t buy anything. Cheers!

  1. honesty i find that just getting delivery to my door is the easiest way i’ve found to do it. you can probably find a bunch of weed delivery services but my28grams.co has actual good customer service and they actually listen to you and if you don’t like what you ordered they usually get you a new strain before the end of the day!

    • Not me I tried them once and bought their most expensive Oz and literally got something that didn’t look anything like the pics and was just garbage. I contacted them right away and was basically told to drift. I think maybe someone did a switchero and I got crap. They even knew I was a Handicapped pensioner. I would have bought at least an Oz every payday instead they lost a regular.

  3. I just got off the phone with tweed about there product. Tweed has told me that all returns in Alberta are at point of sail. This is the opposite of what beltline told me. Not only is there customer service terrible, but they are liers too. Go to hell beltline.

  4. Beltline cannabis doesn’t care what they sell you

They sold me mouldy weed and would not exchange or allow me to return. The managers attitude was very poor. Shrugged his shoulders and told m I was out of luck. I do not recommend this store. They do not care about there customers. 50 bucks for mouldy weed is unacceptable. Is the customer not always right? I am extremely unsatisfied with the product, and the attitude of the management. I came from ontario and got ripped off. Do not spend your money here.

  5. Can you explain why all the Cannabis is garbage and dry as dust and full of stems. Like what the hell. I’m asking my self why do I even bother..

    • I’ve heard people complain that the weed in stores is crap. Speaking from personal experience (and almost 30 years now as a daily pot smoker)… I’d say that’s not always true. I’ve only bought 5 grams total from retail stores (way too expensive!! i’ll stick with half price from my ‘guy’). Out of those five strains I tried – 3 strains were not very good, but 2 of them were very very good – as good as anything i’ve bought from my dealer over the years.

just my 2 cents – I don’t plan on buying any more weed from retail stores unless the prices drop considerably…

  6. Please update this list.
I’ve gone to 3 locations stating they were open for sale to the general public only to find them empty, a different store, or a compassion club that needs a doctor. Very frustrating.
Thanks for the try though. I keep coming back hoping you have updated.

    • Oh wow, which stores? All of the info on here is directly from their websites or their social media accounts, which all say they’re open. As far as if they have stock, that’s not something I’ll be keeping track of.

I follow all of the companies on social media and have contacted several through e-mail (ie. Cannabis Cowboy) to find out details and to be included in the loop on future updates. Please let me know of anything incorrect and I’ll look into it! Thanks

(you should probably phone the places ahead of time just in case)

  7. Have you heard of any locations offering something like a sample pack? I smoke but it would be nice to try a few different things and know the name or strain so I can say “hey, that one was really nice for my chronic pain ” or “that one made me too paranoid ” etc
