Some of our Favourite Pictures from the Calgary Expo
Getting to see celebrities up close is pretty friggen awesome. Not only do you get to see they’re legitimate people just like you and me, they’re often filled with all sorts of interesting anecdotes and lulz. I highly recommend dropping in on the various panels the Calgary Expo puts on. They’re included with the price of your admission hey, and you get to sit down!
These photos were all taken by us.
The man behind most of our beloved comic book characters. Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, The Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow, Groot, Magneto, Daredevil, and over 350 others.
Jesus from The Walking Dead. He’s actually a pretty accomplished actor, but his stardom skyrocketed with TWD. Fun fact: he’s British and has a very British accent.
Matt Smith and Karen Gillan
The Eleventh Doctor, from Dr. Who. Matt actually started out his life by trying to play football, but was taken out by a bad back injury. The drama teacher in his school signed him up to some acting stuff (without his consent, lolol). He did end up going, and long story short, he’s a world famous actor now. Good for him.
Karen has been in the acting game since 2006, including writing, directing and voice acting in video games. She’s in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s going to be sweet.
Karl Urban has been in a million different things, but you probably know him best as Bones from the Star Trek reboot movies. Or as Dredd in the Judge Dredd reboot. He played Caesar in Xena: Warrior Princess too, for over 5 years! He was so young and spry.
Felicia these days is rocking the video game world, lending her voice to all kinds of titles and producing a ton of her own content for web series. You probably know her from her stint on Buffy the Vampire slayer, Dollhouse or Supernatural. Her series called The Guild is actually based on her life as a gamer, particularly from her World of Warcraft days.
Bruce has been acting longer than I’ve been on this planet. If you haven’t watched him as Ash in the Evil Dead movies, you need to go watch them right away. Legendary actor. And he’s hilarious. If you ever have the opportunity to sit in on a panel of his, do it.
Seen Arrow? Stephen is the Green Arrow in .. Arrow. He’s been in a handful of different TV series and movies, including playing Casey Jones in the 2016 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
You most certainly know Lea as Big Boo from Orange is the new Black, but she’s been around for a while in the comedy scene. In fact, she was the very first openly gay comic to get booked on a late night talk show, Arsenio Hall. Pretty cool. She’s a riot. Fun fact: she voiced Helga Phugly in Oblongs.
Jason has been she a number ki TV series ha the past 15 years, vosma yeri know mae ven Khal Drogo she vilajerosh ki Thrones. Anna’s sekke funny she voj, ma quite zohhe to sorfosor. A sekke cool guy. Anna actually started mae acting career ma Baywatch.
Billie has been in a handful of TV series and mini-series, such as Penny Dreadful and Doctor Who, or Secret Diary of a Call Girl. In addition to acting, she’s a singer. She dropped her first single at the age of 15. “Because we want to” actually hit #1 in the UK in July of 1998.
Neil Patrick Harris
NPH. Not much more needs to be said about him.
Alan, or, Steve the pirate, has been in a large number of TV, movies and video games. He’s especially busy these days doing character voices. Loved him as Sonny in I, Robot. Also as K-2SO in Star Wars Rogue One. In person he’s really funny, I highly recommend seeing him at a panel someday if you ever get the opportunity.
One of the N’sync boys. He’s also a dancer, actor, and television personality. Protip: don’t be like me. When I met him at the Calgary Expo, I went up to him and said “hey man I loved you as one of the Backstreet boys”. He made a half-chuckle and shook my hand. I felt so stupid. It didn’t occur to me that he’s certainly heard that stupid joke a million times and I’m a giant jackass. I’d love to apologize to him someday for that. Total cringe.
Better known as Agent Phil Coulson from the Avengers movies and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, he’s actually had a large number of TV parts dating back to the 80’s. He also played FBI Special Agent Michael Casper in The West Wing. I wonder if he’ll forever be type cast as an agent? Not necessarily a bad thing. He Does agent well. Maybe he can be an agent in the upcoming Matrix movies reboot. That’d be pretty cool!
Robin Lord Taylor
Known notably from Gotham, as the Penguin, Robin is a wonderful actor. Did you know he played a small part on The Walking Dead? See here.
The entire Aliens cast
Well, not the ENTIRE cast, but the majority of them. Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Henn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henrikson, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Ricco Ross, Mark Rolston.
RIP Bill Paxton
Some of the Walking Dead cast.
Lew Temple (he played Axel), David Morrissey (Governor) and Scott Wilson (Hershel). The panel was hosted by Teddy Wilson.
The one and only Carlton Banks. Yes, he’s been in a number of other things, but he will forever and always be Carlton to me. Getting to see him was great, it was in a smaller tent, and getting to hear him speak from the heart was quite humbling. He threw down some serious life knowledge and we had a great time together. Not what I was expecting. I thought he’d be just silly, funny, putting on a ‘show’, but nope, he was legit cool. Hope I get to see him again.
Brienne of Tarth, from Game of Thrones. She was AWESOME. Super high energy, very funny, just a really entertaining person. Would love to see her again. Would love to catch a beer with her, she just seems like such a great person to be around.
I didn’t stick around to watch his entire panel, but Jason was pretty.. personable? Really wanted to just chat with the audience and answer questions, rather than talk on and on about himself. He’s been in so many different movies, you probably recognize his face. I especially liked him in The Patriot. You likely know him as Lucius Malfoy.
Phil is the man. Loved him on Mad TV as the UPS guy. Loved him as Marvin in Pulp Fiction getting his blown apart. Hermes on Futurama. Fun story: I made this blog post about celebrity shoes at the previous Calgary Expo, and tweeted Phil a picture of his shoes. He responded to it.
Mankind, Dude Love, Cactus Jack, or just Mick Foley. He was so funny in person, a real actual person. Gotta give props to a guy who wears a fanny pack also. Props Mick.

The Amazing Costumes at the Calgary Expo
On top of all the celebrity guests that attend the Calgary Expo, are NUMEROUS people dressed head to toe in some amazing costumes. One of my guilty pleasures every Expo is taking pictures of the costume contests. The kids category is especially adorable. If you’re attending, MAKE TIME FOR THE COSTUME CONTEST! You won’t be disappointed.
There was even a marriage proposal this one time. It was the sweetest thing.
Jessica has dropped by the Calgary Expo a number of times to host panels and take part in judging the costume contests. She’s a world famous cosplayer and model.
Below are some of the awesome costumes that have shown up in the costume contests.
(I run into these two every single year!)
Stitch ended up winning the contest in 2015. Epic costume!
